Job Description

The Auxiliary Programs Director / Children’s Garden & Lower School Coordinator is a full-time, year-round salaried position. All Washington Waldorf School (WWS) employees are responsible for creating an educational environment in accordance with Rudolf Steiner’s philosophy and the Eight AWSNA Principles of Waldorf Education; collaborating with all WWS employees to support the student population; creating a safe, clean, professional, and welcoming environment for all; contributing to the broader WWS community; and furthering WWS’ commitment to DEIB by creating a safe and inclusive school community that creates a space for each individual.

This dual role is divided approximately 50/50 between two areas:

  • As Auxiliary Programs Director, the individual oversees Aftercare and Summer Camp programs, fostering nurturing, developmentally appropriate environments beyond the traditional school day that reflect the values of Waldorf education.
  • As Children’s Garden & Lower School Coordinator, the individual helps ensure the smooth rhythm of the school day for students and teachers in the Children’s Garden through Grade 6. This includes managing communications, schedules, records, and providing pedagogical and logistical support aligned with Waldorf educational principles.

Key Responsibilities

Auxiliary Programs (Summer Camp and After School Activities) Director

  • Oversee the Aftercare Program and Summer Camp, ensuring they provide a warm, safe, and structured environment rooted in Waldorf principles;
  • Work with school administration to ensure all compliance and regulations needs are met for both the Aftercare Program and Summer Camp;
  • Recruit, hire and manage Aftercare staff and Summer Camp instructors;
  • Serve as the main point of contact for families enrolled in auxiliary programs;
  • Collaborate with administrative team to ensure the successful promotion and operation of Aftercare and Summer Camp programs;
  • Maintain organized records and documentation related to attendance, registration, budgeting, and scheduling, summer program staff payroll; and
  • Manage childcare staffing for in-service, employee professional development, parent-teacher conference days, and as may be additionally required.

Children’s Garden & Lower School Coordinator

  • Serve as the primary administrative point of contact for Children’s Garden and Lower School families, faculty, and staff;
  • Compile and distribute regular parent and community communications;
  • Manage daily substitution coverage for daily Lower School and Children’s Garden teacher / assistant absences;
  • Participate in school-wide calendar planning and coordinate adjustments due to weather, events, or other needs;
  • Planning logistics for festivals, field trips, assemblies, parent evenings, and other events in coordination with department chairs;
  • Manage process to collect, and maintain student health (including immunization & medication) records and emergency contact information as required. Communicate with families regarding student health and wellness as needed, in collaboration with the School Nurse;
  • Maintain accurate records of and for student attendance, health (including immunization & vaccination), permissions, and other student information using the school’s systems and in accordance with confidentiality and data security laws and WWS policies;
  • Participate in updates to and distribution of family and employee handbooks, guidance, and other materials as requested by Department Chairs and administrative staff;
  • Provide admin support for hiring and onboarding processes for Children’s Garden and Lower School faculty and assistants as requested by Department Chairs and administrative staff;
  • Attend Children’s Garden and Lower School faculty meetings, and provide admin support for department decisions and initiatives; and
  • Assist with classroom transitions (e.g., arrival, lunch, recess, dismissal) and help with field trips or special events.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required or commensurate experience;
  • Familiarity with Waldorf education or commitment to learning more is required;
  • Experience in a school or camp setting is preferred;
  • Certified or willing to become certified in CPR/First Aid and as a Maryland Medication Technician;
  • An active team member with proactive problem solving mindset;
  • Excellent collaboration, interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills;
  • Proficiency with administrative systems; ability to learn school-specific platforms; and
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and maintain composure in a dynamic school environment.

The compensation for this position includes a salary range of $51.5K-$64K and our full benefits package which includes health, disability and life insurance; dental reimbursement; retirement plan (after 1 year of employment); optional dental, vision, and illness/accident insurance; professional development support; and tuition remission for the employee’s children attending WWS, as articulated in the Employee Handbook.
