Job Description
Washington Waldorf School (WWS) teachers are responsible for educating students in accordance with Rudolf Steiner’s philosophy and the Eight AWSNA Principles of Waldorf Education; following the WWS High School Science, Technology, and Math Scope and Sequence(s) in delivering well-researched and engaging lessons; collaborating with all teachers who serve their student population; creating a safe, clean, professional, and welcoming learning environment for all; modifying and adapting teaching, as appropriate, to meet student needs and abilities; contributing to the broader WWS community; and furthering WWS’s commitment to DEIB by creating a safe and inclusive classroom and delivering lessons that allow students to see themselves as well as understand others.
The High School Chemistry / Technology / Math position is a 50% position, as determined by the position’s teaching responsibilities and Additional Responsibilities as assigned.
The role may be split into several roles, if need be, and we encourage applicants with expertise in any of theses areas to apply.
Teaching Responsibilities
- Teach Math track classes to two different grade levels, four days per week (between 10:30am – 12:30pm year round);
- Teach two Chemistry seminars (M-F 8:30am – 10:00am, approximately 4 weeks per seminar);
- Teach two afternoon hands-on-Technology courses in the year (Wednesday & Friday, 1:15pm – 3:00pm for 8-10 weeks per course).
Included in Teaching Responsibilities:
- Write student reports in accordance with established guidelines and time frames:
- Communicate student progress in a clear and timely fashion;
- Prepare for and conduct parent-teacher conferences, per Department requirements;
- Follow Educational Support Plan accommodations, as provided by and in collaboration with the Education Support Department;
- Schedule and lead/attend Class Parent Meetings, per applicable guidelines;
- Plan and/or chaperone field trips and overnight class trips;
- Supervise students at and support festivals and assemblies;
- Provide other programming and student support as applicable;
- Prepare for classroom activities and lessons;
- Be cognizant of and attend to recess responsibilities;
- Serve on a least one (1) standing committee, unless specifically exempted;
- Attend pertinent faculty and committee meetings (if teaching in more than one department, attendance may be alternated);
- Attend August and June in-service and out-service meetings;
- Stay up to date on all required trainings, including CPR and First Aid;
- Support admissions procedures by hosting prospective students, interviewing families and providing feedback;
- Keep abreast of WWS happenings by reading meeting minutes, the weekly Bulletin, Parent Square, and other communications;
- Attend professional development events and mentoring meetings; and
- Engage in on-going professional learning and growth, including Waldorf-specific training as required by the Head of School or designee.
Maintain Established Community Norms:
- Respond to parent and collegial communication as established in applicable Communications policies;
- Provide weekly classroom updates to parents, and additional communications as appropriate, in accordance with established formats and schedules;
- Comply with School expectations; professionalism; and behavior standards, policies, and procedures, including those set forth in the employee handbook or other applicable documents.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Chemistry or similar subject;
- Waldorf teacher training certification, or commensurate experience required;
- Experience teaching high school preferred.
The compensation for this 50% position includes an annual salary range of $26K-$32K.
