Washington Waldorf School Early Childhood Assistants support Lead Teachers in cultivating a warm, inclusive environment and provide meaningful and creative experiences, allowing children to be deeply immersed in play while nourishing their sense of wonder, trust in themselves, care for others, connection to nature, and love of learning.

The Washington Waldorf School is seeking a warm, dependable, and collaborative Early Childhood Assistant Teacher to join our Early Childhood program. This salaried, non-exempt position partners with the Lead Teacher throughout the school day to help maintain a calm, joyful classroom environment that supports the healthy development of children ages 2–6.

The ideal candidate enjoys working with young children, values collaborative relationships, and brings patience, flexibility, and enthusiasm to each day.

Position Responsibilities

• Support the Lead Teacher in maintaining the daily classroom rhythm.
• Assist with classroom supervision and children’s care throughout the school day.
• Help prepare and serve snack and assist with classroom setup, cleanup, and organization.
• Support transitions, outdoor play, rest, meals, and other aspects of the school day.
• Prepare classroom materials and learning environments for daily activities.
• Foster a warm, respectful, and nurturing environment that supports each child’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development.
• Support meaningful experiences that encourage imagination, creativity, movement, and connection with nature.
• Build positive relationships with children, families, and colleagues.
• Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with Lead Teachers and other members of the Early Childhood faculty.
• Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, in-service days, Parent-Teacher Conferences, enrollment events, and other school activities as requested.

Required Qualifications

• Experience working with young children.
• Ability to meet Maryland Office of Child Care licensing requirements.
• Ability to successfully complete a comprehensive Maryland criminal background check.
• Ability to work both indoors and outdoors throughout the year in varying weather conditions.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
• A warm, patient, flexible, and dependable approach to working with young children.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field.
• Waldorf Early Childhood training or a strong interest in Waldorf education.
• Experience supporting children with diverse learning and developmental needs.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to actively engage with young children throughout the day, including standing, walking, kneeling, lifting classroom materials, and participating in indoor and outdoor activities in seasonal weather.

Schedule

This is a full-time, salaried, non-exempt position during the academic year, generally scheduled Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Occasional hours outside of the regular schedule are expected for Parent-Teacher Conferences, professional development, in-service days, faculty meetings, enrollment events, and other school activities.

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full-time, salaried, non-exempt position with an annual salary range of $35,000–$40,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
