Inclement Weather Policy
WWS INCLEMENT WEATHER AND EMERGENCY CLOSURE POLICY
Updated November 2016
WWS follows Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in many, but not all, inclement weather decisions.
Notices of WWS decisions regarding delays, closures, and early closings will always be communicated through a notice on the WWS website home page (www.washingtonwaldorf.org), a recorded message on the WWS main phone line, and an email.
We also ask that all parents sign up with AlertMCPS to receive email and/or text alerts of delays and closures at: www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/emergency/alertmcps.asp.
Late Openings and Early Closings:
If Montgomery County announces late opening (of any length of time) due to inclement weather:
WWS classes will begin at 10:00 a.m.
Classroom doors will open at 9:45 a.m. and early morning care will begin at 9:15 a.m.
If Montgomery County announces early closing due to inclement weather or County-wide emergency:
WWS will close early.
All after school activities for students (including sports and tutoring) and aftercare will be canceled.
Parents of Children’s Garden and Lower School students are to pick up or arrange for alternate pick up of their children as soon as possible. No aftercare will be provided.
High School students will be dismissed as soon as possible after the Montgomery County announcement, unless a parent has called the school to make other arrangements. We will gather students for announcements and messages regarding dismissal, carpool, and transportation arrangements. We will send email and update the high school voicemail greeting at 301-229-6107 x115 regarding the time of the early dismissal.
If your High School student has siblings in or carpools with Lower School or Children's Garden students, please plan ahead so that your High School student will know whether or not to collect younger students in the event of an early dismissal.
If Montgomery County announces that schools will be CLOSED due to inclement weather:
Day 1 of MCPS closure: WWS will be closed.
Day 2 (next day) of MCPS closure: WWS will be closed.
Day 3 (and afterwards of consecutive day MCPS closure): WWS will make its own determination as whether to be open or closed. This decision will be made in consultation with other private schools in our area, bearing in mind that the safety of our families and faculty remain paramount.
WWS will communicate our decision by 6:00 a.m. of the morning of the 3rd day of consecutive day closures, and on any subsequent days.
In the event of an emergency or potential emergency related to impending severe weather or security issues (i.e. tornado or police event):
WWS will follow its internal guidelines and notify students and parents as soon as possible of our plans for managing the specific situation. WWS has a flexible emergency response plan, with options including lockdown, sheltering in place, and evacuation, that we will tailor to meet the demands of a particular situation as it evolves. If you would like more information about our emergency response plan, please contact the Facilities Manager, John Cox, at (email@example.com).
